Air Intake & Air Filter
Your engine has a number of parts that are susceptible to damage by dirt and grit. The first line of defense against these contaminants entering the engine is the air intake filter. The air filter is made from a pleated paper cloth medium that is engineered to allow air to pass through quickly and to trap the tiny particles that get swept up off of the road and into the air intake system.
The pleating of the air filter creates an extremely large surface area to maximize the life of the filter, but as the dust and dirt particles become trapped, the airflow potential—measured in Cubic Feet per Minute—drops. When the CFM airflow of your filter drops below the CFM demand of your engine, then driving performance suffers and drivability issues may arise.
To prevent any air filter related drivability issues, you should follow your vehicle manufacture’s recommendations and change the air filter at the suggested intervals. Periodically, a visual inspection of your air filter can alert you to an unhealthy build-up of dust and dirt in which case, you should replace your air filter even if the recommended interval has not been met. Driving in dusty conditions or high wind areas may require more frequent air filter replacements than normal driving conditions would require.
